Types of Maps

As is true for maps of geographic areas, maps for chromosomes and complete genomes can be made using various types of methods and various scales.
For example, some types of geographic maps include physical, political, and contour. They represent the same geographic area, but look different and use different scales.
Some examples of genome maps include those below:
  • cytogenetic map (and chromosome band numbers)
  • genetic linkage map (also called "genetic map")
  • physical maps
    • radiation hybrid map
    • clone based map (e.g., YAC map)
    • sequence map
