Radiation Hybrid Map
- similar in ways to a genetic linkage map because the distance of two markers from each other is related to the frequency with which they break apart. The higher the frequency, the greater the distance.
- However, radiation hybrid maps are made by inducing chromosomal breakage with x-rays (rather than natural chromosomal breakage during meiosis), and have a higher resolution than genetic linkage maps.
- use varying doses of radiation to break chromosome into pieces
- GB4 RH panel: 3,000 Rads
breaks DNA into approximately 10 megabase pieces
average resolution of the map is 1 megabase
scale of the GB4 panel is cR3000
- G3 panel: 10,000 Rads
breaks DNA into approximately 3 megabase pieces
average resolution of the map is 500 kb
scale of the G3 panel is cR10000
