Curated vs. automatically generated Entrez Gene Records
The amount of information in an Entrez Gene record varies based on how much information is available for a particular organism or gene, and whether that record was hand-curated or generated in an automated way.
The Gene records for some organisms (such as human, mouse, rat, and a number of other model or commonly studied organisms) are hand curated by NCBI staff and/or collaborating organism-specific research groups.
Records for other organisms, particularly the prokaryotes and lower eukaryotes such as yeast, are automatically generated from the corresponding gene information that is annotated on their RefSeq NC_* records, which represent complete genomes or chromosomes.
