Related Records Within Database

"Related records" link in Entrez search results

Retrieves records that you might not have found by a straight text term search

Therefore powerful browsing tool

The algorithm used to find related records depends on the database:

  • PubMed:  word weight algorithm
  • Nucleotide sequences:  BLAST
  • Protein sequences:  BLAST
  • Structures:  VAST
  • Conserved Domains:  CDART
    • CDD related domains = two or more domains that hit the same protein sequences, in the same place (just need to overlap, and not necessarily to hit the identical span of the protein sequence)

Demo: from the sample RefSeq record: NM_000249, follow the related sequences link
  • The related records contain nucleotide sequences similar to the one in NM_000249, even though they might not contain your original search terms from you human colon cancer query)

  • In this way, the Entrez system enables you to retrieve potentially relevant hits that you might not otherwise have found, so the "related records" function of Entrez serves as a powerful browsing tool.
