Diane Rein received her Ph.D. degree in Developmental Biology from the Institute for Developmental Research at the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center in 1977. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine, she extended her early interest in neuroblastoma non-muscle contractile proteins to the cellular, molecular and genetic study of human muscle diseases, primarily muscular dystrophy, and was part of the first team to isolate, identify, and characterize the genes involved in abnormal muscle development in the now classic model system, Caenorhabditis elegans. Subsequently, she held an active faculty position at the University of Cincinnati where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the biological sciences and directed a federally funded graduate research program in mammalian DNA polymerase-beta excision repair processes that involved characterizing both the proteins and genes involved.

Beginning in 1994, Diane became active as an analyst/consultant for various biotechnology companies. It was during this time that she became fascinated in scientific information transfer and flow that ultimately led to her obtaining a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2001.

Diane joined Purdue University Libraries in 2003 as an Assistant Professor of Library Science and Assistant Life Sciences Librarian at Purdue University Libraries in West Lafayette, Indiana. As the Biomolecular Sciences Specialist for Purdue Libraries, she uses her extensive experience, both as an academic faculty member and an active laboratory bench researcher, to engage with faculty, individuals and communities across campus, for the purpose of identifying information needs in the context of work as it is practiced by biomedical researchers and then matching them with system-wide products and services. She organized a campus-wide instructional how-to series of bioinformatics workshops and lectures, Bioinformatics Week, which aims to provide a broad foundation for enhancing bioinformatics knowledge and practice to the widest possible audience at Purdue University.
