  8:00 am - 8:30 am   Welcome and Introduction

 
  8:30 am - 10:00 am   Gene "story" #1: human MLH1 gene, implicated in colon cancer.
A sequence of exercises showing how to gather a wide variety of information on a single gene, using various databases and tools. Guided demo, with instructor showing how to do each exercise (i.e., which resource/approach to use) and explaining why it is important, with students working along.

 
  10:00 am - 10:30 am   BREAK

 
  10:30 am - Noon   Gene "story" #1, continued.

 
  Noon - 1:00 pm   LUNCH

 
  1:00 pm - 3:00 pm   Gene "story" #2: human PER (period) gene, important in circadian rythms.
Another sequence of exercises showing how to gather a wide variety of information on a single gene. However, students first each exercise independently, trying to figure out what resource/approach to use, then instructor reviews each exercise with the group.

 
  3:00 pm - 3:30 pm   BREAK

 
  3:30 pm - 4:45 pm   User Questions Grab Bag Variety of questions on different topics that require the use of different resources. Combination of guided demos and/or more independent work by students followed by instructor review.


 
  4:45 pm - 5:00 pm   Course Evaluation
