Digging In: Hands-on Experience with NCBI's Molecular Databases
Schedule Exercises Comments Credits

This one-day course is a sequel to the original 8 hour MLA CE course on Molecular Biology Information Resources, which was given at various locations in the country from May 1997 - Nov. 2001. It leads participants through a series of hands-on exercises using a core set of NCBI resources to build upon the concepts learned in the original course. In addition to reinforcing Entrez and BLAST search skills, it provides experience with LocusLink, Cn3D (the 3-D protein structure viewer), and the Map Viewer for complete genomes. Participants will understand the scope of each resource through first-hand experience, and will be able to identify the types of questions it can be used to answer. A "user questions grab bag" at the end of the day will be used to evaluate and reinforce participants' skills in answering actual user questions with the resources used in class.

Individuals who took the original 8 hour MLA CE course on Molecular Biology Information Resources, which was given at various locations in the country from May 1997 - Nov. 2001, and who want additional hands-on experience without having to take the complete 3-day revised and expanded course on Introduction to Molecular Biology Information Resources.
(This in an intermediate level course. Links to introductory and advanced courses are provided below, under "Additional Courses".)

Participants should have basic understanding of molecular terms and have taken the original 8-hour course on Molecular Biology Information Resources.

If you do not have the necessary prerequisites for "Digging In", please take the 3-day MLA CE course Introduction to Molecular Biology Information Resources instead. That course covers both the background information about molecular biology information resources, as well as the complete set of hands-on exercises to be covered in the "Digging In" course.

The Digging In course is essentially a subset of the 3-day introductory course, covering only its hands-on exercises. It is necessary to have background knowledge of molecular biology basics as well as molecular databases and search tools in order to understand the exercises.

Please register through the MLANet web page for the MLA 2003 Annual Meeting. If you have questions about registration or about MLA CE courses in general, please contact Kathleen Combs. Her contact information is also provided on the MLANet web page that describes the Digging In course.

The MLA 2003 fee for full day course is $360 for MLA members, and $410 for nonmembers.

"Digging In: Hands-on Experience with NCBI's Molecular Databases" is an intermediate level course offered at the MLA 2003 Annual Meeting. It is actually the hands-on subset of the three-day introductory course described below, and assumes that participants have all the background knowledge covered in that course.

An introductory three-day course on Introduction to Molecular Biology Information Resources is also available, and is recommended for those new to the field. Using a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, it provides a brief molecular biology review, background information on commonly used molecular biology databases and software, and hands-on exercises.

A five-day advanced course, the NCBI Advanced Workshop for Bioinformatics Information Specialists, is offered each August for full-time bioinformatics specialists based in libraries, including scientists who have been hired for these specialized positions as well as bioinformatics librarians. A science background or knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, and experience with the resources covered in the introductory course, is required for the Advanced Workshop.

A one day Field Guide course for scientists is offered at various locations around the country as well as at NLM.

The NCBI Education page also offers a variety of educational resources.
