   Course Description

The National Center for Biotechnology Information presents an expanded, on-site, two-day version of the popular Field Guide.

No previous NCBI course experience is required, but some experience with NCBI tools and databases is assumed. This course is intended for biologists who desire a more in-depth look at the NCBI resources than can be provided in the standard Field Guide. The expanded course provides more detailed coverage of NCBI molecular databases and tools. The focus will be on effective use of the Entrez system and sequence similarity searching with NCBI BLAST. The BLAST portion is extended to cover Web, standalone and client versions. The course will give special emphasis to genomic information and molecular structures. The hands-on practical portion is more extensive and incorporates the Exploring 3D Molecular Structures and Identification of Disease Genes courses.

This enhanced Field Guide is limited to the first 60 applicants. All participants must provide their own network-ready laptop. Supported operating systems are Windows2000, XP for PCs or Mac OS 10.2 for Macintosh. The laptop must have a network card pre-configured or configurable for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and have a standard Web browser (Netscape 9.x, Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher version of these) installed. NCBI software (Cn3D, BLAST and Netblast) and databases will be installed on the laptops during the course.
