Wednesday, March 25, 11 AM Bldg. 38A, B2 conference room Mutational biases, gene finding and protein evolution Luciano Brocchieri, University of Florida College of Medicine Prokaryote genomes are characterized by a wide range of compositional biases, particularly in regard to GC content. The combination of strong mutational biases and negative selection generates strong sequence contrasts that provide means for identifying genes and information on their modes of evolution. The study of the effect of different mutational pressures on gene and protein sequences suggests new approaches to modeling protein differentiation and to the reconstruction of evolutionary trees.
