The Conserved Domain Database curation effort establishes a fine-grained classification of protein families. In future CDD releases, specific annotation as provided by NCBI-curated models will be distinguished from non-specific annotation with domain super-family footprints. I will discuss the rationale for making this distinction and present a preview of protein domain annotation as provided with the upcoming CDD release 2.14.
